Ah, work.. [Jul. 23rd, 2008|12:05 am]

temporaltokaki
Ok, so for those of you who don't know...I'm currently sitting in GA. Not FL. I've moved.

Sadly, my wife, Ainyan, is in FL. For the next month.

I start my new job tomorrow, and report to new teacher orientation in Newton County.

I'm nervous, and excited.

I'm also not surprised to note that there are no less than four mathematics positions open in the school district that, up til recently, was in a hiring freeze. You know, the one I used to live in. XD

Still, this feels right. Doesn't make me less nervous, but it feels right.

[mood | frustrated]

I think my video card on my desktop is going. If there's too much of a load on it, it overheats (and I've taken the card out and cleaned it out with canned air, but the fan seems gummy and I don't know how to clean it) and I lose all the red tones on my monitor. Even when it's not overheating, it tends to give me scrolling lines in the bottom half of the screen, particularly on some WoW textures (particularly the Quel'danas and Nagrand 'grass' texture) which is really frustrating.

Any suggestions? It's a NVIDIA GeForce 7600GS 256MB card, about a year and a half old now. I haven't had any problems that canned air didn't fix before, and right now, I can't really afford a new card, so I'm sort of stuck with trying to fix it. >_<;

In need of a bit of beta-reading... [Jul. 18th, 2008|01:59 pm]

So, I've been having a plotbunny gnaw on me since Cissie showed up in Wonder Girl's miniseries recently, back in costume, and Bart's death in the terribly-characterized Flash run.

This is a really rough draft. Please beta. D: )

Another One Nails It [Jul. 18th, 2008|01:35 pm]

This one from "momgamer" at Gamers With Jobs:

"New bells and whistles can be great. But sometimes when I play a game, I don't want the Cirque de Soleil. I want Cheers. I want to walk in the door and have the same three guys who have been sitting at the end of the bar for as long as anyone can remember give me a nonchalant wave as I walk past them. Then I'll settle on my usual stool just as the bartender slaps my usual drink on the coaster in front of me. I'll sip my beer and he'll tell me what's new. It probably won't be much, but I'm good with that."

Dragon Age Origins [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:12 am]

Not surprisingly, the best description of my reaction to the gameplay footage for Dragon Age Origins comes from Tycho over at PA:

"This looks like some ridiculous personal fantasy given form."

Spiritual successor to BGII? Yes, Please.

How was your day? [Jul. 17th, 2008|04:59 pm]

hamusutaa
There are a few metrics I can use to determine how well my day is going.

The first is how many IM conversation windows I end up with at the end of the day. Today I'm at 6, which is pretty high.

Another is at what point I've finished the bugs which I was supposed to have finished yesterday and can start working on today's bugs. By this measure, 5 p.m. is pretty awful, especially since we consider a working day to have eight hours in it.

This leads into the last one: what time I get home in the evening.

Fanfic recs! [Jul. 14th, 2008|05:31 pm]

Though admittedly, many of these are author recs over fic-recs...

1. Sakon76 -- Writes for Transformers (G1, movie) Kamen Rider, Princess Tutu (Seriously amazingly good sequel to Tutu!), Ouran and Weiss. I particularly recommend the TF movie fics and her Tutu fics.

2. An Cailin Rua, also [info]tricolora on here. TF fic that makes you think -- something of 2007-verse crossed with G1. Also the source of the Iron Man/TF movie crossover that I hope to see more of soon, because the Tony-voice is perfectly written. Particular recommendations: Naturalized/Revelation.

3. Dwimordene, who writes Transformers movieverse fic that makes you think. The Transformers aren't humans in metal bodies, they're alien -- something that a lot of 'ficcers seem to forget -- and many of Dwimordene's fics deal with these differences. Particular recommendations: Bridges, Indefinite Objects.

4. S'TarKan, who writes for a number of different fandoms. Sometimes, his characterization is too much 'go back and fix the series and make characters powerful!', but the stories are well-written and enjoyable.

That's really all for now.

While I'm not certain where I stand on the illegal immigrant topic, I do know that it's not on the 'Screw them all, they're taking OUR LAND and making it THEIRS' side of things. The Statue of Liberty's inscription still rings in my mind as what I'd like this country to be: a melting pot of sorts. The other side of me points out that the inscription was made when there were still many more cheaply-available resources than before, and fewer public programs paid for by taxes.

That said, when I get a disapproving look and a 'Well, that's why we have the First Amendment!' from my boss for saying that I don't really find anything wrong with having street signs in another language, I feel rather uncomfortable.

His rhetoric on this subject is along the lines of, "They still hate us for having California. They've said, 'We'll take it back! If it has to be done one at a time, we'll take it back!'. I don't like when people come into my country and try to make it theirs."

My boss is a really nice guy, but it's things like that that make me really want to get out of here.
